I met many engineers who thought their managers had no idea. I must admit that we all have had incompetent managers, incompetent colleagues, incompetent teachers, incompetent friends and even incompetent partners. We live in a world where most of us (including me) are incompetents.
But, wait a minute … if indeed all our managers, colleagues, teachers, friends and partners are incompetent we should start thinking about that something wrong is happening.
No, in the world most people is not incompetent. Sure we do not know everything, but then to say that we are incompetent, in the absolute sense, there is a long way.
We must be generous to others, value their effort and while we might know more them in many areas, we must fight to thrive as a team and then, 1 + 1 becomes 3.
But incompetence is a huge burden on a team and when someone is really incompetent on what he/she does, we must do our best to keep the team performing as a team, let the incompetent stop the team and then 1 + 1 becomes 0.
The best that we can do is:
- Respect others.
- Have a broader view.
- Talk openly and honestly with our managers or whoever should remedy the problem and listen and respect his/her views.
